Alexa Avilés Stands With Working People
-
On Affordable Housing
Alexa has consistently fought to keep families in their homes and make housing a human right. She’s secured vital funding for repairs in public housing, championed tenant protections against displacement and harassment, and led the charge to expand affordable and supportive housing across Brooklyn.
-
On Public Safety
For Alexa, true safety means investing in communities, not just policing. She’s delivered funding for violence interruption programs, school safety initiatives, and mental health services — while holding city agencies accountable to fairness and transparency.
-
On Education Equity
As a public school parent and former PTA leader, Alexa has been a fierce advocate for fully funded, inclusive public education. She’s secured after-school and youth programming, fought budget cuts to schools, and demanded culturally responsive curriculum and restorative practices.
-
On Workers’ Rights
Alexa stands shoulder to shoulder with working people. She’s rallied with union members, supported protections for delivery workers and street vendors, and passed legislation to ensure all workers — especially immigrants — are treated with dignity and paid fairly.
Alexa Avilés
Democrat for City Council
District 38
Alexa Avilés is a proud mom, community organizer, and the first Latina elected to represent Brooklyn’s 38th District in the New York City Council. Rooted in the values of dignity, equity, and justice, Alexa has spent her career fighting for working-class communities.
Born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico and raised in East New York, Alexa is a proud product of New York City’s public schools and the daughter of a union family. She has lived in Sunset Park for over 20 years, where she and her husband are raising their two daughters. Before entering public office, Alexa spent more than two decades in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, advocating for education equity, immigrant rights, environmental justice, and youth opportunity.
Elected to the City Council in 2021, Alexa has led with courage and clarity. Now as Chair of the Council’s Public Housing Committee, she is fighting to hold NYCHA and its private partners accountable, increase transparency, and fight for real investment in public housing. She’s championed legislation to protect tenants, support workers, reform public safety, and expand youth programming. And she’s brought home millions in funding for schools, open space, affordable housing, and community-based services.
Whether she’s on the Council floor, in a tenant meeting, or marching with workers on the picket line, Alexa shows up for the people she represents. Now, she’s running for re-election to continue that work: standing up to powerful interests, delivering for the neighborhoods she loves, and building a more just and joyful city.
