Darlene Mealy is a veteran public servant, labor advocate, and Brooklyn native with a long record of fighting for economic equity, community investment, and opportunities for working families. She currently represents New York City’s 41st Council District, which includes Brownsville, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Ocean Hill, and parts of East Flatbush - a seat she previously held from 2006 to 2017 before returning to serve her community again in 2022.
Before entering public office, Darlene worked for over a decade as an MTA transit worker, giving her a firsthand understanding of the challenges working New Yorkers face. As a proud union member, she brings that lived experience to City Hall and remains a vocal champion for labor rights, fair pay, and safe working conditions.
During her time in the Council, Darlene has sponsored major legislation advancing economic opportunity, including Local Law 1 of 2013, a landmark bill that expanded access for minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) to compete for city contracts. She continues to lead on issues of workforce inclusion and community development, pushing to ensure that city investments benefit local workers and small businesses.
As Chair of the Council’s Civil and Human Rights Committee during her previous tenure, Darlene led efforts to combat discrimination, protect tenants, and uplift historically under-resourced neighborhoods. She has secured funding for housing rehabilitation, public safety improvements, and youth and senior services.
With decades of grassroots organizing and legislative experience, Darlene Mealy remains a steady, principled voice for the people of Central Brooklyn. She knows how to get results,build coalitions, and make government work for working people.
