Democrat for City Council
District 7
Shaun Abreu is a tenants’ rights attorney, community advocate, and lifelong New Yorker fighting for dignity, justice, and opportunity in the neighborhoods that raised him. Born and raised in Washington Heights to Dominican immigrant parents, Shaun experienced firsthand the instability so many families face - including eviction, which displaced his family when he was just nine years old. That life-changing experience fueled a career dedicated to public service and defending working families.
Shaun earned his B.A. from Columbia University and later graduated from Tulane University Law School. He returned home to represent low-income tenants facing eviction, working at the New York Legal Assistance Group and other legal nonprofits. His career has been shaped by a simple but powerful belief: no one should be denied a safe home, a fair job, or a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.
In 2021, Shaun was elected to the New York City Council representing District 7 — which includes Morningside Heights, West Harlem, Manhattan Valley, and parts of Washington Heights. As the first Latino to hold this seat, he has been a fierce advocate for housing justice, environmental equity, and working-class communities.
Shaun has voted to build tens of thousands of affordable housing units, secured major sanitation improvements in his district, and channelled millions in investments toward schools, parks, and public infrastructure. He has supported small businesses, backed strong protections for workers, and made public safety and health a top priority.
Now, Shaun is running for re-election to keep fighting for the neighborhoods that raised him — and to build a city where every New Yorker has the security and opportunity they deserve.
