Pierina Ana Sanchez is a lifelong Bronxite, proud Afro-Dominicana, and one of New York City’s leading voices for housing justice, economic equity, and community power. As the Council Member representing District 14, which includes University Heights, Kingsbridge, Fordham, and Mount Eden, Pierina brings deep personal roots, professional expertise, and fierce advocacy to the work of building a more just and livable city.
Born and raised in University Heights to Dominican immigrant parents, Pierina is a product of the Bronx’s public schools and a first-generation college graduate. She went on to earn degrees from Harvard University and Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs, driven by a passion for social justice and systems change. Her career has included service in the Obama White House, the New York City Mayor’s Office, and as a policy advocate working to expand affordable housing and equitable development.
Elected to the City Council in 2021, Pierina now serves as Chair of the Housing and Buildings Committee, where she has led the charge for stronger tenant protections, safer living conditions, and increased investment in deeply affordable housing. She is also a vocal champion for climate justice, youth opportunity, and equitable public infrastructure — always centering the needs of Bronx families in policy decisions.
Whether fighting displacement, pushing for investments in schools and parks, or standing with tenants and workers, Pierina leads with courage, care, and commitment to the people she represents. Her lived experience, policy expertise, and unwavering belief in the Bronx guide everything she does.
Now, Pierina is running for re-election to continue that work — delivering bold solutions, amplifying community voices, and securing the investments her district deserves.
